Since ‘Extend Your Career’ quietly went live on 29 May2017 and officially launched on 13 June via email by Dr Laura Poole-Warren PhD – Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Training) and Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) – it has had a great start with over 500 user visits and just over 2100 page views.
This is a unique website which will be the key career and training resource for UNSW academics, researchers and support staff, with use expected to increase over time as the word spreads. User input and promotion to others is encouraged.
Dr Poole-Warren also said that Extend Your Career will also assist individuals to consider development of their career at UNSW and beyond.
“I envisage that Extend could be used to prepare for performance discussions and that individuals will use it as a way of thinking about their careers proactively,” she said.
“It has already been successfully used with the newly appointed Scientia Fellows, prior to their Career Development and Coaching sessions and other pilot feedback has been very positive.
“This is a holistic, integrated web based career and professional development resource that assists researchers, academics and those working in a related area, at any career stage assess their development needs, identify potential development options and source them at UNSW Sydney. It is a supplementary and preparatory resource to the UNSW My Career process,” said Dr Poole-Warren.
Before it went live the site was presented to various academics at UNSW and further afield in London and Ireland by Cecilia Strenstrom, Director, Researcher Development where she said the response was very enthusiastic.
“It was important that we got feedback from a few people as the website took shape and before it went live so we were extremely pleased with the reaction. Those at other universities also saw how convenient it would be to have a similar system in their institutions, so this was the best feedback we could get,” said Ms Strenstrom.
“The site will be constantly monitored and updated with feedback encouraged. If anyone sees a gap we wish to fill that immediately, so users should not hesitate to get in touch if they see something that needs changing or improving,” she concluded.
The site was created by the Researcher Development Unit in consultation with HR, Learning and Teaching and the Division of Research and has been endorsed by the UNSW Higher Degree Research Committee. Web design and development was by the Web Development team at UNSW.
A big thank you goes to all those involved for making this first month a great success.
